Unlike its flagship campus, Newport lacked a sports program, and the client desired a fresh, vibrant identity that would set it apart and create a unique legacy.

Building a Legacy: Infusing History into a Modern Sports Brand

The main challenge was the absence of a sports program and the need to differentiate from the academic plane logo that lacked a sports element. The concept we landed on was to leverage the campus’s rich history of military aviation and focus on a specific plane – the training plane. This not only connected with the heritage but also provided a niche and distinctive theme.

The goal was to create a sports brand that not only paid homage to the historical significance but also resonated with the energy and aggressiveness associated with sports. The unique legacy of the old training plane became the focal point, ensuring a brand that was both historically rooted and modern.

Full Branding and a New Avenue for School Spirit

ASU Newport implemented a comprehensive branding strategy, crafting a new logo, mascot, and visual identity around the training plane. This addressed the challenge of lacking a sports program and provided a platform for cultivating school spirit. The “Aviators” gained a historically resonant mascot and branding, setting them apart from the main flagship campus. The introduction of a sports program not only filled a void but also generated a dynamic atmosphere for students to express school spirit. Actively celebrating the legacy of military aviation, this unique initiative went beyond preservation to embrace and highlight history.
